San Patricio EDC Workforce Training Center Feasibility Study
Despite a growing demand for skilled laborers, San Patricio County’s unemployment rate remains higher than regional and state levels. The San Patricio EDC has received EDA funding to conduct a feasibility study, to determine whether or not the county could collectively support and benefit from a workforce / vocational training center. The EDC is partnering with Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, Del-Mar College and numerous industry leaders and small businesses to determine what local laborers need to know to become more employable.
In addition, the EDC is in the process of surveying residents for opinions about workforce training including: whether or not people want / need a training center, what kind of training residents would find helpful, what kind of skills local industries are searching for, etc.
The San Patricio EDC is making contact with each community to coordinate town hall meetings over the course of the next year. Joint Town Hall meetings are small-group based, community-oriented and interactive.
Participants have the opportunity to take an online survey, hold small-group discussions, and complete a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, threats) analysis for their city.
In addition, industry representatives from the county’s top employers including voestalpine, DuPont, Cheniere and others participate in the feasibility study, by expressing their labor force needs and the types of employees they seek.
The EDC believes that in order to improve the quality of life, we must invest in human capital. Together with institutions of higher learning and private business and industry, the San Pat EDC is striving to match the local unemployed with fulfilling careers and salaries with which they can provide a satisfying living for their families and future generations.
