More Opportunities for a Growing Workforce

In Economic Development, jobs are everything. The numbers that get the attention are the ones that say hundreds of millions or billions, but the real story is the number of jobs created. Those billion dollar numbers are great for the tax base but the important thing is the thousands of jobs that are created. The ExxonMobil / SABIC proposed plant along Hwy 181 will create thousands of jobs. Those jobs include construction jobs, permanent jobs and, just as importantly, indirect jobs.

Exxon says there will be 11,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent jobs. WOW! These jobs have excellent wages and great benefits. These jobs will create more housing units, more retail stores, more restaurants, and more amenities. In short, a better quality of life, and a better place.

Housing, retail, restaurants, and amenities are where those indirect jobs come in. Jobs in those areas will number in the thousands. People will build those houses and stores. More people will live here. Cooks and clerks will work in the new businesses. Small businesses will open and create jobs. Existing restaurants and retail stores will see increased business because of the construction jobs and the direct jobs. Everyone in San Patricio County knows the value of jobs. We all know that the more jobs that are created, the more prosperous the community will be.

Some people have expressed concerns that there is a risk in having the plant in the proposed location. The risk is less than the risk you take driving to work each day or driving to the store. Exxon plants go hundreds or even thousands of days in their plants between work injuries. Safety is a top priority for their employees as well as the community. Even those who have concerns about the plant should take heart that the permitting process is a lengthy, rigorous vetting that includes public comment and public hearings so their voices will be heard. In the end, the decisions on permits will be based on solid, scientific facts. Exxon has listened to other community concerns and is taking steps for the plant to be as attractive as a plant can be. Because of our location, our Port, our workforce and our access to inexpensive energy, we will continue to attract industry, but we will never find a better corporate citizen, a better employer, or a better creator of jobs than Exxon.

The San Patricio County Economic Development Corporation supports growth, jobs and prosperity for the entire county - not just one city or one part of the county. The ExxonMobil / SABIC plant is good for all of San Patricio County. Let's work together to make it happen
