One of the world's largest steel manufacturers is going to be joining Steel Dynamics here in Sinton Texas.
The German conglomerate ThyssenKrupp AG will be opening a new location here, cementing Sinton's place on the manufacturing map.
With the group opening a new service center on the Steel Dynamics campus, CEO Iain Vassey says this makes their facility one of the largest in the south.
"Steel Dynamics by themselves will hire somewhere between seven and 800 workers something along like that but I would not be shocked if we saw 2000 workers on that campus." Said Vasey, "Really put us on the map and one of my staff is there at a lot of tradeshows...The Steel industry and the metals industry... he hears on a regular basis the excitement about that facility on the Steel Dynamics campus in Sinton."
The 1.9 billion dollar plant is still under construction, but it's set to begin production by the end of the month. Once it's running, Steel Dynamics believes they can manufacture upwards of 3,000,000 tons of steel each year.
The general manager, Dennis Black, told us that they have already contracted out 2/3rds of the steel they are going to make at the plant.
"Some are construction products, some are tubing there's a pipe mill inside. There's other guys who are maybe going to cut it up and sell it to other people you know ours are large coils they're going to cut it up and sometimes the solid direct and other times they may actually do the processing for us." Black explained.
Black says it's a good problem to have, and there are still plans to sell the steel to companies here in Texas. The hope is that the company can construct another 300,000 square-foot facilities to meet the demand.
